Celebrate Diwali on a Luxury Houseboat in Alleppey

Diwali usually means a loud, crowded house. Cleaning that started a week ago, relatives in and out, a table that never gets cleared, and fireworks until the neighbors give up. Plenty of families love every minute of it. Others, quietly, would like one year off.

A houseboat in Alleppey is a good way to take it. Not skipping Diwali, just doing it differently.

Kerala Does Diwali Quietly

It helps to know that Diwali isn’t Kerala’s biggest festival. Onam and Vishu carry more weight here, and Deepavali is observed more softly, mostly at home and in temples. For a houseboat trip that works in your favor. There’s no citywide noise to escape from, and the backwaters stay calm even in festival week.

Lamps on Still Water

Light is the whole point of Diwali, and it looks better on still water than almost anywhere. A few lamps along the deck, their glow wobbling on the canal, a handful of lit windows on the far bank, and no street lights to compete. It’s closer to what the festival was about in the first place than a lit-up apartment block.

One practical note. Open flames on a boat need some care, so ask the operator what’s allowed before packing diyas. Fireworks are best left on land.

Sweets and Supper

Kerala has its own sweet tradition: payasam, unniyappam, banana chips fried in coconut oil. A houseboat kitchen cooks from what’s fresh, which on the backwaters means fish bought off passing canoes and vegetables from nearby farms. Families who want a Diwali-style menu, or who plan to bring their own mithai from home, should say so when booking.

When to Go

Diwali falls in the first half of November in most years, right at the start of the October to March season. Dates around the festival tend to fill first, so earlier is better. Early November can also still bring an evening shower as the rains tail off, which is worth keeping in mind when planning the deck time.

Who It Suits

Couples who’d rather have a quiet Diwali than a hosting one. Families who want a break from the kitchen for a few days. Small groups of friends. The boats range from one bedroom to five, so a group of up to 15 can book out a single boat and have the whole thing to themselves.

Spending It at Spice Routes

Spice Routes Luxury Cruises runs its houseboats from a 200-year-old heritage home near Chennamkary village, about 10 km from Alleppey town, with a 7-acre private farm on the grounds. Every booking is private, the crew comes mostly from nearby villages, and the operator holds Kerala Tourism’s Diamond Classification. Wi-Fi works only at the heritage home, so the Diwali greetings and photos are best sent before boarding. After that, it’s just the boat, the lamps and the water. Bookings and details are at spiceroutes.in.
